What Type of Camping Lantern to Use

As the father of an active Star Scout I get the chance to go camping once a month or so, year round, so Ive learned a lot about camping lanterns and gear in general. Face it, if someone forgets to pack the lantern, we turn around and go home. But what I would like to address here are the different types of outdoor lanterns used while camping.

By far, the most popular line of camping products is made by Coleman. Not to plug them in particular, but everyone knows them. Coleman lanterns come in many shapes and styles. Propane lanterns, kerosene lanterns, led lanterns, battery lanterns; Every camper knows no flames inside the tent. When it comes to lighting the camp site though, our area Scout counsel uses propane. They are cheap and easy to use. They also fit inline with the propane stove. With the propane lantern, you can adjust the brightness as not to bother neighbors that may be start gazing on the next camp site.

When it comes to battery lanterns, its a trade off. Granted that they are safe, especially when you have small children around, but they can also be moved from the main / dinning area to the restroom a mile down the road, then into the tent. But then do you use a dozen alkaline batteries or the rechargeable lanterns? Coleman Lanterns makes both types. Though these can be recharged even using a car cigarette adapter, always have a few regular batteries as a backup.

One fun idea I found, one that could even be turned into a campsite activity, is to build a portable solar charger. For about $85 - $95 you can turn a small cooler (Coleman of course), a small solar panel, rechargeable battery, and a handful of mounting hardware, you could have your own source for recharging those lantern.

Side note: Do you remember seeing those flashlights advertised on TV that you shake up to recharge it? In my personal experience, they last about as long as the novelty does. Basically, I used it for one camp out and never again.

Ive heard good arguments for the LED lanterns also. They are a way more sturdy and use less power. So again, if you are going to have small children around, or if you take your dogs camping also, the LED lanterns may be the best choice for you.

But for those of us that look forward to getting out as often as possible, you just can't replace the hiss of the lantern you know what Im talking about.

My many years as a Boy Scout dad, has allowed me to learn and share many aspects of camping. I have put this and many other 'need to know' out doors activities together here in one spot for easy access.

My son has been in Boy Scouts for 4 years now and he is working on his Star Ranking. I have been adopted as an assistant and have enjoyed just about every camp out they have gone on. I've learned a lot from those little guys, and must say that I look forward to these monthly outings each and every time. Rain or shine, winter or summer.
